Bass Fishing with Back Pain
By: Matt Harvey
I wanted to write this article about bass fishing with back pain, because I have been fishing with back pain for the majority of this year, and I want to share some tips to make your fishing trips easier.
First off I wanted to share that the cause of my back pain, which comes from two torn discs in my lower back. The cause of that is oddly enough unknown, but most likely something genetic.
I have heard a lot of bass fisherman complain about their back hurting after fishing or some have it in the truck ride to the lake. Its primarily from the positions we sit in or stand in for long periods of time that cause pain in our backs. Granted there aren’t any ways around it but there are ways to take care of your back while fishing. I have tried a lot of things to make fishing easier for me and here is what works the best for me.
First thing that can help is the shoes you wear. I love wearing flip flops but they just don’t support your feet enough. A better option is a good pair of Nike running shoes or the Columbia PFG powerdrain shoes. Either option is good support and provides good cushion for your back.
The next thing is a orthopedic foam seat cushion. That is a big thing for me when I’m driving to the lake or tournament. It keeps the pressure off your spine and will allow you to fish longer before your get pain. I also bring my cushion on my boat for more comfort. I really feel the relief when I spend 6+ hours on the water pre fishing and I’ve been running from area to area.
For those of you that fish the delta like I do you know that the wakeboard boats can put up a big wake that even a 21 foot bass boat cant go over nicely. When I’m in a tournament I normally don’t slow down to much for wake but it really helps your back from taking a bad beating if you just go slow over the wake instead of beating your back up.
Lastly keeping a bottle of an anti-inflammatory on the boat incase your back flares up is always a good idea for those days you really need the relief.
Go get em!
